Castro resigns in Cuba

Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro announced in a letter today his resignation as President of Cuba. This comes after 50 years of being the spotlight leader defending socialism in the western hemisphere. The USA has sanctioned a trade embargo on the island of Cuba to try and squeeze the Cuban population to rebel against his governement and economic policies. Castro handed over power temporarily to his brother, Raul, in July 2006 when he underwent intestinal surgery.
