Huddie “LEAD BELLY” Ledbetter, (January 23, 1889 – December 6, 1949) was an American folk and blues musician, who is famous for his title “King of the 12-string guitar” and his clear and distinct singing voice, that has sold millions of records worldwide.
He is best known as Lead Belly and Paramount Pictures produced a biographical movie about him directed by the late Gordon Parks in the 1970s. Though many albums list him as "Leadbelly," Ledbetter himself spelled it "Lead Belly." Ledbetter first acquired his famous nickname while he was in prison; his fellow inmates dubbed him "Lead Belly" as a play on his last name and a testament to his physical toughness. His most famous songs are “Goodnight Irene”, “Bourgeois Blues” and “Rock Island Line”.
