The Honorable Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones , the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress, died Wednesday evening after suffering a brain hemorrhage. She was 58.
A champion for the people and someone I worked with closely in Washington DC. She fought hard against predatory lenders and was on the Ways and Mean committee. She once told her staff a story about meeting Muhammad Ali as a college student and giving him a ride to the lecture hall. After graduating, she worked for the city sewer district and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Tubbs Jones also served as a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas judge and prosecutor before running for political office.
Former U.S. Rep. Louis Stokes made Tubbs Jones his hand-picked successor in 1998.
Ohio will miss a true champion for the people of Cleveland and someone who rose to the US governement despite her gender and race.
REST IN POWER!
