Virgin Nigeria may pull out

Virgin Atlantic is in talks to sell its 49 per cent stake in Virgin Nigeria, which it set up in 2005, following an increasingly acrimonious dispute with the Nigerian government over the location of the loss-making west African carrier’s domestic operations.

Sir Richard Branson, president of the UK longhaul carrier, on Tuesday accused the authorities of using “Mafioso-style” tactics to force Virgin Nigeria to move services from the international terminal in Lagos, the commercial capital.

“It is regrettable that events have caused us to review our shareholding and whether it is appropriate that the Virgin brand should remain linked to Virgin Nigeria,” Sir Richard said.

Virgin Nigeria was hailed as a symbol of investor confidence in Nigeria when it was set up by Virgin Atlantic and Nigerian institutional investors, in part to meet demand for a reliable carrier given the country’s poor record for air safety.

Virgin Atlantic claims that the government reneged on a deal signed under Olusegun Obasanjo, the previous president, that let it use the international terminal for all services.

Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (R.I.P)

The Honorable Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones , the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress, died Wednesday evening after suffering a brain hemorrhage. She was 58.

A champion for the people and someone I worked with closely in Washington DC. She fought hard against predatory lenders and was on the Ways and Mean committee. She once told her staff a story about meeting Muhammad Ali as a college student and giving him a ride to the lecture hall. After graduating, she worked for the city sewer district and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Tubbs Jones also served as a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas judge and prosecutor before running for political office.

Former U.S. Rep. Louis Stokes made Tubbs Jones his hand-picked successor in 1998.

Ohio will miss a true champion for the people of Cleveland and someone who rose to the US governement despite her gender and race.

Huddie “LEAD BELLY” Ledbetter, (January 23, 1889 – December 6, 1949) was an American folk and blues musician, who is famous for his title “King of the 12-string guitar” and his clear and distinct singing voice, that has sold millions of records worldwide.
He is best known as Lead Belly and Paramount Pictures produced a biographical movie about him directed by the late Gordon Parks in the 1970s. Though many albums list him as "Leadbelly," Ledbetter himself spelled it "Lead Belly." Ledbetter first acquired his famous nickname while he was in prison; his fellow inmates dubbed him "Lead Belly" as a play on his last name and a testament to his physical toughness. His most famous songs are “Goodnight Irene”, “Bourgeois Blues” and “Rock Island Line”.

Kali seminar in Vancouver

If you aren't already aware of this Filipino martial arts event being offered in beautiful Vancouver, BC this coming weekend, please feel free to spread the word amongst your mentors, colleagues, students, etc. This joint training seminar is a gathering of the various systems/styles of Filipino martial arts & instructors in the Vancouver area - a resurrection of an event that was last held here in the mid-1990s.

We have made it more encompassing to include other aspects of Filipino culture (dance, food) and also more family oriented (so bring your friends and family). The great thing is that all the instructors are volunteering their time (actually they're paying for insurance coverage and park permit use), but it is FREE for all participants. Please spread the word. We would love to have you join us!

Bernie Mac dies at 50 (Rest in Power)

Bernie Mac, the actor and comedian who teamed up in the casino heist caper "Ocean's Eleven" and gained a prestigious Peabody Award for his sitcom "The Bernie Mac Show," died Saturday at age 50.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.

He also was nominated for a Grammy award for best comedy album in 2001 along with his "The Original Kings of Comedy" co-stars, Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Cedric The Entertainer.

Kidz in the Hall assaulted

Double O from the hip hop group Kidz In The Hall was assaulted by several bouncers early Saturday morning, July 26, while inside a nightclub in Tempe, AZ following a Kidz In The Hall performance. Group member and friend Naledge, who did not witness the assault on Double O, was arrested outside of the club. Naledge's attempt to get medical assistance for Double O was misconstrued as a hinderence to the investigation. Reports that no injuries were sustained are false as Double O was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries from the excessive force used by club security. On Sunday morning Double O underwent surgery for one of his injuries. He is still in the hospital, but in stable condition.

In the last 2 years, Kidz In The Hall have traveled to over 10 countries, have done 200+ shows and never before been involved in any altercation, big or small, with club or concert security, or police officers.
