Studio Gangstas

BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTION

This Bronx, New York-based rap duo comprised DJ Scott LaRock (b. Scott Sterling, d. 27 August 1987, South Bronx, New York, USA) and rapper KRS-One (b. Lawrence Krisna Parker, 20 August 1965, New York, USA). KRS-One (aka KRS-1) is an acronym for Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone, and 'edutainment' remained a central theme in the work of Boogie Down Productions. Similar to most New York rap crews, their lyrics highlighted the problems faced by the black community in a modern urban environment, compounded by the increasing drug problems, gang wars and use of weaponry on the streets.

LaRock and KRS-One met at a homeless people's shelter in the Bronx, where LaRock was a counselor and KRS-One a client. Following their first release, their debut album, Criminal Minded, was produced in conjunction with fellow Bronx crew, the Ultramagnetic MC's. It was a set that actively suggested that young blacks were entitled to use 'any means necessary' in order to overcome years of prejudice and discrimination. It sold over 500,000 copies and was instrumental in kick-starting the gangsta rap movement.

Unfortunately Scott LaRock soon thereafter became the victim of an unknown assassin while sitting in a parked car in the South Bronx. He was one of the first few Hip-Hop artists to actually be killed after becoming an artist ( like the late 2pac B.I.G. Jam Master Jay and others).

Enjoy
Until Next Time

African Underground: Democracy in Dakar is a groundbreaking documentary film about hip-hop youth and politics in Dakar Senegal. The film follows rappers, DJs, journalists, professors and people on the street at the time before during and after the controversial 2007 presidential election in Senegal and examines hip-hop's role on the political process. Originally shot as a seven part documentary mini-series released via the internet - the documentary bridges the gap between hip-hop activism, video journalism and documentary film and explores the role of youth and musical activism on the political process.

New Yorker magazine cover insults Obama campaign

Once again the US media via newspapers, news, magazines and cartoonist have decided that it was funny to place a picture of Barack and his wife on the cover as terrorist and flag burning revolutionaries. Why is America so afraid to see images of positive African Americans who have an opportunity to make key decisions in today's spoiled politics and economy? Although no one is immunue to satire in pop culture and especially the political world this was distasteful and a poor decision to confuse the masses of people who are still undecided about supporting a black candidate who has a background in grassroots organizing.

The New Yorker magazine is known for doing controversial covers that have nothing to do with the actual issue. This choosen cover does not damage the Obama campaign but its doesn't help either to clarify that he is not a muslim and that his wife is not out to hunt "whitey". John Mccain voted against MLK Day and no one has accused him of being a racist for voting against a day that millions of Americans are proud to celebrate. Why? Now ask yourself the same question.

Every Child Left Behind

The "Certificate of Completion or Attendance" that is being offered in lieu of high school diplomas, is a part of Bush's "No Child Left Behind". This is how it works:

1. Drop out and go to a GED program or,
2. accept a "Certificate of Completion" - it is NOT a diploma. Once a student accepts it, they cannot ever get a diploma or a GED. A certificate of completion means that a student can never (as long as they live):
1. go to the armed services 2. go to college 3. go to trade school 4. go to journeyman's school 5. go to beauty school 6. go to culinary arts school 7. get a federal loan in their lifetime
This is the portion of NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND (2001) that Bush slipped in during the 2004 revision of the NCLB bill. It has not been publicized. At a high school in Indiana, in 2005, there were 87 seniors in the graduation class. Five got diplomas and 82 got "Certificates of Completion".
This is being referred to as the "Paper Plantation". It is better for students to drop out and get into a GED program so they may seek other forms of education, later in life, if they desire to do so. All 50 states have "Certificates of Completion or Attendance".

Make sure to pass these valuable piece of infromaton to parents who have children in high school.

WANTED- Movie review

I saw "Wanted" this weekend, and I was disappointed. Were there great stunts and action packed moments yes. Was someone curving a bullet maybe the coolest thing I had ever seen on the movie screen, probably. In my opinion though the storyline was just not strong enough to support the wild special effects. Even in the matrix they offered explanations as to how they were able to defy physics and all the laws of the universe that we know.As the movie starts a seemingly normal human being runs for about 40 yards and jumps out of a building across a street and on to the roof of another building.
I love cars and car chase scenes and this movie had no shortage of them. However they were so completely outlandish that all concepts of reality had 2 be left at the ticket counter. Now bottom line in this review is that if you love outlandish totally unrealistic movies, like "The League of Exraordinary Gentleman" then you'll love it. If you have a hard time letting go of reality save your money and see your local bootleg man. Anyway that's just how I see it. I'm sure everyone will have their own opinions though.

NEW SPIKE LEE MOVIE CALLED " MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA"

RECORD COLLECTING

The search for a piece of music history is most valuable in the form of a vinyl record. Collectors, DJs, music fans and old uncles have keep their most precious collection of music in a 12" incl sleeve. I have recently stumbled upon on a collection located in a friends "closet box" that was forgotten about. Inside we find an entire colleciton of Jimi Hendrix, Tom Waits, Ray Charles, Led Zepplin and even a few sheets of baseball cards with Ernie Banks(1958 Home Run champion) in it. Nice and neat next to a "The Harder they come" soundrack cover between a Billy Joels and Lightin Hopkins record.

Use technology but dont lets technology use you. Playing on a turntable is still the best way to "feel" and " hear" music. No diss to APPLE and the iPOD!
Recent discovorieson 12": Harry Belfonte " The Midnight Special" (Lead Belly song), Bob Dylan 'Hurricane", Stevie Wonder, 2 Live Crew
