Obama rejects Mccain call to suspend campaign

This is a news report from Al Jezeera about Sen. Barack Obama rejecting the recent call from John McCain to suspend campaign ads and even move the Presidential debate this friday.
READ ON.

The US Democratic presidential candidate has agreed to meet his Republican rival and other leaders in Washington to try to resolve the country's financial crisis.

But Barack Obama rejected John McCain's call on Wednesday to postpone a debate between the two on Friday, saying Americans wanted to hear what their future leader had to say on the crisis and that a president should be able to multi-task.

McCain announced that he would "suspend" his campaign, pull television advertising, halt fund-raising and return to Washington on Thursday to try to help negotiations over a stalled $700bn bail-out plan for Wall Street

"This is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who in approximately 40 days will be responsible for dealing with this mess. And I think it is going to be part of the president's job to deal with more than one thing at once"--Barack Obama, Democratic candidate

BOOKiDO Heroes: The Duwamish tribe

The Duwamish tribe (pronounced [dxʷdɐwʔabʃ] in Lushootseed) is a Native American tribe in western Washington, and the indigenous people of metropolitanSeattle.Villages were usually located facing a beach and body of water or river navigable by canoe, near a creek and drinking water source. Beyond the diffuse villages and anthropogenic grasslands, most land was heavily forested, understory tended to be dense along the edges; travel by canoe was generally far more practical. The nearby creek (dzəlíxw or stútələkw) would often be called Little Water (stútələkw), an endearing familiar.[18]

The People of the Inside and the People of the Large Lake (Dkhw'Duw'Absh and Xacuabsh, today Duwamish), like other Salish, were more a collection of villages linked by language and family ties than like a European model.[19] Relationships and stature among family and community were important measures or goals in life. Traditionally there was no recognized permanent political leadership. Native Americans in general, and Coast Salish in particular, just didn't do things in ways that White people expected or would readily understand. Native social structures (and economics) drove Whites to distraction.

BOOKiDO HERO: ARTHUR ASHE

BOOKiDO is a active lifestyle company that promtes exercise and being involved in helping others across the world. Our profile this week is on the late great Arthur Ashe a father, humanitarian, and professional tennis player. Read on!

Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. (July 10, 1943 – February 6, 1993) was a prominent African American tennis player who was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. During his playing career, he won three Grand Slam titles. Ashe is also remembered for his efforts to further social causes.

The story of Ashe's life turned from success to tragedy in 1988 when Ashe discovered he had contracted HIV during the blood transfusions he had received during one of his two heart surgeries. He and his wife kept his illness private until April 8, 1992, when reports that the newspaper USA Today was about to publish a story about his condition forced him to make a public announcement that he had the disease. In the last year of his life, Ashe did much to call attention to AIDS sufferers worldwide. Two months before his death, he founded the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health to help address issues of inadequate health care delivery and was named Sports Illustrated magazine's Sportsman of the Year. He also spent much of the last years of his life writing his memoir Days of Grace, finishing the manuscript less than a week before his death.
Ashe died from complications from AIDS on February 6, 1993

Arthur, the first African-American male to win a Grand Slam event, was an active civil rights supporter. He was a member of a delegation of 31 prominent African-Americans who visited South Africa to observe political change in the country as it approached racial integration.

He was arrested on January 11, 1985, for protesting outside the South African embassy in Washington D.C during an anti-apartheid rally. He was also arrested again on September 9, 1992, outside the White House for protesting on the recent crackdown on Haitian refugees.

HOW TO sell books

From The Economist print edition

HOW-TO books are the most successful kind of non-fiction; the best sell millions of copies. As John McCain and Barack Obama each try and persuade Americans that they are the key to the future, authors with just as much energy and drive are peddling different how-to fantasies: how to pass your SAT test, how to help your company “make the leap” from good to great, how to cook Chinese food.
But it is Randy Pausch, until he died of pancreatic cancer in July, a professor of computer science at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, who is outselling them all with his advice on how to achieve your childhood dreams. Asked to speak as part of a series called “The Last Lecture”, Pausch recounted how as a child he persuaded his parents to let him repaint his room, how he got to experience zero gravity, how he married the woman of his dreams, learned how not to be arrogant and got to meet Captain Kirk. “We cannot change the cards we are dealt,” he says in “The Last Lecture”, “just how we play the hand.” That’s how to sell a book.

Thabo Mbeki Loses Touch with Ordinary South Africans

South Africa’s President took over the helm from Nelson Mandela in ‘1999 with so much promise for his leadership. In his first term, he managed to get many African governments on board his “African Renaissance” philosophy and helped shaped the new African Union and one of its key programs, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). Yet on the domestic front, his Presidency very quickly lost touch with ordinary South Africans; first on HIV/AIDS where he failed to develop a coherent treatment policy and on the implementation of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment, which continues to benefit an elite few at the expense of the wider black population who are confronting widespread poverty and unemployment.

Thabo Mbeki’s policy of quiet diplomacy in neighboring Zimbabwe has contributed to the Xenophobia taking place across the country, especially in Johannesburg where more than one million fleeing Zimbabwean nationals are said to have settled to find work.

Earlier this year, and in the midst of growing dissatisfaction with his leadership, Mbeki made the gravest mistake of all, placing himself on the ticket to run against Jacob Zuma as African National Congress President. Mbeki suffered a dismal public defeat and support for Jacob Zuma as both the new Party President and as the future ANC Presidential candidate became widespread. In the months leading to the party elections, Mbeki failed to back credible and outstanding would-be contenders such as Cyril Ramaphosa. In his final year in office, Mbeki is essentially handicapped by his own doing, leaving millions of South Africans who are dealing with huge electricity tariff hikes and rising interest rates without the critical leadership they need.

Stay tuned for more articles related to African politics and business.

Gonzales Says He Does Not Recall

LET'S NOT FORGET ATTORNEY GENERAL GONZALEZ WAS PRESIDENT APPOINTED.

Former attorney general Alberto R. Gonzales told investigators that he could not recall whether he took home notes regarding the government's most sensitive national security program and that he did not know they contained classified information, despite his own markings that they were "top secret -- eyes only," according to a Justice Department report released yesterday.

Gonzales improperly carried notes about the warrantless wiretapping program in an unlocked briefcase and failed to keep them in a safe at his Northern Virginia home three years ago because he "could not remember the combination," the department's inspector general reported.
A National Security Agency official who reviewed the notes said they contained references to operational aspects of the wiretapping initiative, including a top-secret code word for the program, information that had been "zealously protected" by the agency and was "not a close call" in terms of its sensitivity, the report said.

She has been compared by the Republican Party as having more foreign policy experience than Barack Obama. Now to give you some background history Palin applied for a passport for the first time last year when she went to visit American troops overseas in Iraq and Germany. At the same time Obama traveled internationally when he was in college and saw first hand a developing nation while visitng his father's home country Kenya.
